The Coaster Bench began as a line. While sketching out possible designs for a bench, I found myself drawing lines with a curve, indicating the profile of a finished piece. Since many of the drawn lines mimicked the shape of the spine, the curve was designed to elongate and stretch the back. To create the curve strips of red oak were steam bent then attached to the leg structure.
Main sources of inspiration were the human body, Japanese architecture and design, and roller coasters. The Coaster Bench was made by hand using traditional woodworking techniques in an effort to fuse design and craft. It is approximately eight feet long, nineteen inches wide and thirteen to seventeen inches high.
After strips of oak were steamed and bent, cross supports were attached on the underside.
